From the Phone - Vol.10

A note: This post was supposed to go live in January of 2022... My bad.

Another note: For whatever reason, Google won't let me adjust the resolution of the images I am uploading, so my apologies for the low quality. *UPDATE* They're full resolution if you click on them.

Google sends me an email each month telling me how many miles I've traveled so far this year. As of December 1st I've accumulated some 87,159 miles of travel, roughly 3.5 times around the world. That's not as much as 2019, though, where I amassed 124,389 miles, or 4.9 times around the world. Mileage may vary from year to year, but suffice to say that this last decade has been spent with one foot in the air and one foot in the dirt. I can feel it, too. In my bones and in my eyes. A creaky noise and a glazed over appearance. Turns out riding fast motorcycles on islands in the middle of the Atlantic, or hiking massive sand dunes in Saudi Arabia with less than three hours of sleep takes a toll on the ol' skin and bones. But that's the shit people say when they're balls deep in something they allegedly love - the kind of complaining a business owner does when they're making more money than they have time to spend. A catch-22 if you will. With that, I'll leave you with yet another assortment of photos taken on my telephone over the last twelve-ish months. An amalgamation of experiences, from Siberia to the Serengeti, Verona to the Vegas-to-Reno, and beyond...

From the Phone - Vol. 9

It's been a few years since I dumped some of the photos from my phone onto this here blog. And honestly, a hell of a lot has happened since my last FtP post in 2018. A trip to Peru for the Dakar Rally, crossing Mongolia in a Land Cruiser (again), late nights in La Paz with the Spruce Bruce, Crispy Boyz with my mom, giant fighting cocks in the Philippines, Moto Guzzis and Russian monuments, scramblers in Portugal, Team No Alto and some Old School MTG, among many other things. The photos aren't in any particular order, and most of them won't mean anything to you without some kind of context. But who gives a goddamn. It's just a little peek behind the curtain, a glimpse into the past, moments captured and typically forgotten on my phone. So, behold!... Shitty cell phone photos, Vol. 9!

From the Phone - Vol.8

Most of this won't make much sense to anyone. It's just a bunch of photos pulled from my phone. Many of which are old, like maybe a year or more. Anyhow. At least I know what it all means, for now, while I'm still cognizant and not suffering from some kind of memory losing old-age disease. That said, the first five or six photos are contemporaneous - a lake in Arizona, an International Scout like the one I had, and a photo of my grandfather and his second wife. Those are followed by a random assortment of images that include a month long motorcycle trip around Italy (and France), drag racing on the East Coast, the stump of my grandmother's redwood tree, my father, my wiener, and a few negronis. It's a mish-mash. And something I haven't done in quite some time. So here goes. A pull from the ol' telephone memory book. If you want to see more, you can hit the FTP tag at the bottom of the post.

From the Phone - Vol.7

Southern California to Seattle... These last few weeks have been playing at a pace I'm somewhat unfamiliar with. Fast Forward. A few days in the dusty butthole of Eastern Washington, riding motorcycles near Leavenworth, hiking and camping along the coast, laying low on Lummi Island. I finally have time to reflect on what has happened, however. To look through my phone and post a few photos. Because as much as I enjoy shooting with a proper camera, I find myself not looking through a lens, but instead at a screen - Instagram, etc. It's a window into someone's world. A way to see what was important. Not food photos, or drunk nights at a dive bar - one shouldn't give a shit about such things - instead what I offer are images from a life spent living in and out of a van, surfing, camping, cooking and riding my recently acquired motorcycle. So with that said, follow the link for some of the latest photos 'From the Phone.'

From the Phone - Vol.6

These last few weeks have been rather wild. Living in Los Angeles, I've been surfing Malibu in the mornings, spending my weekends in San Clemente, drinking beer with Mike Black, eating chicken and waffles at Roscoe's, filming, photographing, and little bit of everything in between. They tried to tow Fargo the Cargo Van, I watched a dude drowned, have had plenty of Pizza Port, one too many margaritas and am getting sorta sick on living inland. Like I've said so many times before, though, the sweet wouldn't be as sweet without the sour. And so, due in part to my lack of time and energy, I give you the latest selection of cell phone shots, some of which you may have seen on our Instagram.

From the Phone - Vol.5

I've gone back and forth about cameras and overpriced image capturing equipment. Stumbling around with tripods, filters, lenses, et al. I love the color and clarity they can capture, the consistency and the confusion. And yet I find myself, like a lot of people I presume, not carrying a camera, but instead relying on a device that is my all-in-one, work from the road, Skype your friend Steve in Albania, email your mom in Arizona, take silly pictures and, on occasion, talk with words not letters. That said, during my six week long #peelgrimage to Southern California, I shot an odd assortment of images, some of which you may have already seen on Instagram, others I've kept quiet. Follow the link and take a look.

From the Phone - Vol.4

It's been awhile since I cleared the cache. Photos from my phone. Images that have been altered, shared, Instagram'd, etc. Albeit less interesting than other images, phone photos are, however, a window into ones life. What happens during their day. The things that surround them and garner their attention. You get it. So follow the link and take a look at some of the shit I've uploaded to Instagram in the last few weeks.

From the Phone - Vol.3

Unfortunately, summer came and went rather quickly. The first days of fall are upon us, and having taken the time to sort through my cell phone, I've decided to post another selection of stills from the last few months. Images I share on Instagram. A few I've kept quiet. Some come courtesy of Karissa_Would. Taco Tuesdays and Mobile Surf Movies, even an image I took while hanging out the front window of Fargo. It's interesting to look at our shitty cell phone shots and instantly-grammed images. It's a good way to remember all of our activities. Which is, after all, why I began this blog. Because my memory is as good as an eight year old, and I figure I can look back at all this when I'm old(er) and say, "Man, those were some fantastic fucking waves." Or perhaps, "Whoa, I really was an asshole!" Anyhow. Follow the link for some additional images.

From the Phone - Vol.2

I can't always carry a camera. And honestly, a lot of the time I prefer not to. Able to enjoy the world around me without feeling like I should be "capturing the moment." Because sometimes the memory of a thing is greater than any image - your imagination filling in for what might be missing. I do, however, have a phone in the front pocket of my Mountain Briefcase, and it, like most phones nowadays, has a camera. A damn good one at that. But in my efforts to enjoy instead of immortalize, I fail. Often. It's called Instagram, and like a lot of social media services, it's an addiction. But for those of you unaffected by this affliction, here's a handful of photos from the last few weeks.

From the Phone - Vol.1

I didn't take many pictures this past weekend. I suppose it could have been because there weren't any waves. Or because I was too lazy to pull a big camera out of my backpack - the phone in my front pocket an all too convenient excuse. Whatever the reason, I did manage to add some things to Instagram. It's a great way to get a sense for what's going on. And to make the mediocre look amazing. But for those of you not on the Instagrams, I thought I'd post a few pictures from our wave-less weekend out west.
